Following the YO-RAN extension, we have been keeping busy behind the scenes to fulfill and expand our project’s goals. That has resulted in us attending many events and conferences, both in the UK and abroad, and we’re thrilled to share some wonderful updates from all of the work we have put in. So, what have we been up to?

Attended Digital Catapult SONIC Labs Open Future Networks Showcase, 30 April in London

The event brought together insights from international stakeholders on the readiness of the Open RAN market and how the technology is progressing. With a specific focus on accelerating open future networks, the SONIC Labs programme demonstrated Open RAN products in action, as well as insights from stakeholders across the global telecoms industry. This insightful event featured engaging talks and panel discussions covering various aspects of O-RAN, ranging from the integration of AI to its market adoption.

Our team presented our findings and key takeaways, and we also demonstrated the scalable AI-based energy-saving xApp that was developed during the SONIC Labs Technology Acceleration Programme, utilizing the VIAVI AI-RSG.

Attended IEEE Infocom 2025, 19-22 May in London

IEEE INFOCOM is a top-ranked conference on networking in the research community. It is a major conference venue for researchers to present and exchange significant and innovative contributions and ideas in the field of networking and closely related areas.

Attended IEEE ICMLCN 2025, 26-29 May in Barcelona

IEEE International Conference on Machine Learning in Communications and Networking brings together researchers from the disciplines of Machine Learning (ML) and Communication and Networking, and aims at promoting fundamental and applied research of ML for designing and analyzing communication systems and networks, as well as for advancing distributed ML over communication networks.

At the conference, we presented a paper entitled “Decentralized Federated Learning for GNN-Based Channel Estimation With DM-RS in O-RAN”.

Attended the Small Cells World Summit, 3-4 June in London

Small Cells World Summit is the global meeting place for operators, neutral hosts, equipment vendors, enterprises, regulators and policy makers. This year, we explored how a diverse next generation of network operators and service providers will provide connectivity to a wide range of use cases.

Attended IEEE ICC 2025, 8-12 June in Montreal

ICC is one of the IEEE Communications Society’s two flagship conferences dedicated to driving innovation in nearly every aspect of communications. This year, IEEE ICC 2025 focused on “Communications Technologies 4Good“. The main benefit of the event was promoting the project outcomes to industry and academia at a global level.

The paper published and presented by the University of Sheffield was “An Energy-Efficient Concurrent Dual-Band Radio Unit for Neutral Host 5G Open RANs”.

Attended IEEE MeditCom 2025, 7-10 July in Nice

IEEE MeditCom gathers visionary researchers in academia and industry from all over the world to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It features a comprehensive technical program, addressing the hottest topics in the areas of communications and networking.

Attended IEEE SPAWC 2025, 1-4 September in Istanbul

IEEE SPAWC 2025 aims to bring together researchers in signal processing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, wireless communications, information theory, probability and statistics, and optimisation from both academia and industry.

Comment from Mostafa Rahmani, who attended the event: “Attending SPWAC was a great opportunity to experience outstanding keynotes on 6G, meet inspiring professors, and engage in deep, friendly discussions. It was a valuable time for sharing knowledge, making new friends, and building connections for future collaboration.”
